Sports tourism

Motorsports are highly popular in the Southern Downs region, with the industry having a wide choice of locations to choose from and hosting events that attract both locals and visitors. There are currently a number of business opportunities available for motor racing in the region, including supply chain opportunities. The region also has a number of sports and recreation facilities that can cater for major sporting events or training camps.  These facilities coupled with the natural landscape provide a real alternative to congested urban centres. 

Nature-based tourism

Nature-based tourism in the region continues to grow due to a combination of unique attractions like Girraween National Park and the region’s proximity to large population centres on the coast. Rich in stunning national parks, beautiful lakes, waterfalls and prehistoric granite formations, the land sits high on the Great Dividing Range more than 900m above sea level.

The cooler climate and unique combination of attractions make the region aprime target for further investment in eco-tourism businesses.There is currently demand for eco-tourism resorts in the Main Range rainforest area, as well as the Granite Belt area adjacent to Girraween and Sundown National Parks.
